Hoorah! Was wondering you were deep, deep, DEEP undercover, or, in the stockade. Naaaa, not the latter....
Best, congrats, and lead from the front. The best tenant youse can follow is - "Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way"
Or
There are three types of leaders -those whom make it happen, those whom watch it happen, and those whom wonder what the hell happened..."
Since you increased your paygrade, I *guess* the first round is on you...

Buck, Congrats! I read everything you ever wrote while I was in Afghanistan for 14 1/2 months. IMHO, It's time for you to drop that OCS packet and start working your way toward the Army paying for law school back at UT while you are on active duty. My email is ugabulldog81@hotmail.com

A quick correction: I did graduate from the Univ. of Texas, but not from it's law school; though I did indeed have designs on it. But the events of 9/11 dumped those plans -- namely in the order of my law school application packet -- straight into the garbage. I've never looked back, but even if I did, I know I made the correct choice. Because really, what does our country need? More soldiers or more lawyers? Personally, it wasn't a hard decision.
As far as OCS goes, I love being an infantry NCO and have no desire to be anything else during the remainder of my time in the Army. (However long that ends up being. TBD). If I can't be at home with my wife and son, then there's nowhere I'd rather be than on the ground, in the s**t with my soldiers.
To quote my former drill sergeant: "I'd rather get my hands dirty on a daily basis than my nose." (My apologies to all you "sirs" out there. But you know it's true.)

Is that paraphrase from 'We Were Soldiers' a hint that you might be going back to Iraq?

What do you mean, "back" to Iraq? I'm already there! (here) Going on my sixth month.
But yes, I did "borrow" that line from Sgt. Major Plumley's character in We Were Soldiers. The only Vietnam film yet to even bother to portray that war accurately.

WHAT? The Joyce Kilmer of the Milblog world is back in Iraq for six months and we just find this out now?
Please don't tell us your muse has left you. Wait that's not possible; that riff on the line by
Sgt. Major Plumley's character was just too casually clever for that.
(By the way I think 'Hamburger Hill' is a close second to 'We Were Soldiers'.)
Will we ever see Give War a Chance?
I've got 'THIS IS WAR: Memories of Iraq' with war footage by the Soldiers themselves, and it's pretty good which means yours would be awesome.
You still have loyal readers you know and we'd love it if could throw us a few lines now and then.
Take care Staff Sergeant.

I knew that as soon as I quit checking your sight for a while you would post something. I am so glad it is great news. Keep up the fantastic work and hopefully the rest of your time there will pass quickly and you can get back home to your wife and son. God Bless always.

Congratulations on your promotion to SSG! When I was an E-6 in the Army, I defined that rank as "the most highly evolved life form known to science.":-)
